If you’re just starting out in the world of making money online you’ll have heard of lots of different methods from different guru’s and websites. On my blog I regularly talk about drop shipping and affiliate marketing, these are two of my biggest income streams and today I’m going to tell you how to make money with affiliate websites.
I don’t usually post inspiration posts but this is from one of my 25+ websites, today. I’m making $15-$50 commissions from one affiliate program all day long on complete autopilot. This website took a few hours to setup over two years ago and is making over $50k per year from organic traffic on Google and Bing.
So how can a website with a few pages of content make so much money?
Simple, by following my four step process:
- Powerful Niche
- Powerful Domain
- Powerful Content
- Powerful Off Page Optimisation
Without these four components you’re pretty much doomed for at least 6 months or you’ll end up creating an affiliate website in an ultra uncompetitive niche that will not make money!
Affiliate marketing isn’t difficult but many people overcomplicate the shit out of it. They find products and services that interest them personally or the same products everyone else is promoting.
This is a big mistake! You need to provide a solution to other people’s problems.
Fitness, health, weight loss, security, homes etc are all hot topics.
Stay clear of ultra competitive topics such as web hosting, finance, law, business especially if you’re just starting out. Other gurus will happily promote launch jacking but again this is ultra competitive (2018).
A powerful niche is one that you can write endless content about and has a good offer you can promote. If we go back to my VPN example (Pure VPN affiliate), I’m solving a problem and recommending an alternative. The other alternative is not an option (not buying one) so they will ultimately end up buying through my link.
For your first affiliate website,
The easiest way to get a good niche idea is to walk outside and ask some people for a problem they’ve recently tried to find a solution for. Ask your friends, family or even ask some colleague students for help.
Then you can refer to sites such as Quora and Ubersuggest and type questions or keywords into the website to find keywords related to your problem.
If you’ve got ahrefs then you can use the keywords explorer to find suggestions for easy to rank keywords related to your niche. Let’s use my VPN example for consistency:
The colored boxes are the keyword difficulties, anything under 25 is fairly easy to rank for. If you compare this to some competitive keywords you’ll probably see 50-70+ scores.
You can easily create a few articles targeting each one of these keywords. This leads on to our next point,
Most people go out and buy a domain such as ‘bestvpnformac.com’ or something solely related to their main keywords. This is a huge mistake especially if you’re planning on building a small niche website.
Don’t fall at this hurdle.
Others recommend going and signing up for a free wordpress website. This is better than the option above but again should be avoided in my opinion.
You need a powerful domain, and by this I mean an expired domain.
Buy Expired Domain
You need to buy an expired domain with metrics. What I mean by this is a domain that has been used by someone else who let it expire and drop back to public registration. Maybe they died, their business went under or they simply gave up. Now you also need to ensure it’s not been spammed or used for promoting scams or fraud.
You don’t even need a domain that is related to your niche (although it helps). Simply find a domain that includes the words, ‘guide, review, course, overview, tutorial, howto’ etc and only use .com or .net.
You can use a website such as Expireddomains.net to find domains, simply create a free account and then search ‘Deleted .Com Domains’ and use the filter to find domains with a Majestic TF of at least 5.
I wrote a guide on how to find good expired domains here.
Now head over to Moz, Ahrefs or Majestic (if you have a premium account) and checkout the domain history. Can you see any spammy backlinks there? If so then this isn’t a good domain.
If it has a natural backlink profile then head over to waybackmachine or archive.web.org and look at the domain history, what did these web pages have on them, again if it looks good then proceed.
Far too many people buy a domain with no history, this means you’re looking at a minimum of 3-6 months just to rank your website correctly. Buying an expired domain allows you to rank within a few days.
Buying a premium expired domain is even better, checkout Godaddy auctions or Snapnames.
Five years ago you could rank a website overnight with a shitty article written in 5 minutes or spun using various spin bot programs. These days you need powerful content and by powerful I mean, written by a professional and over 1,000 words per article.
If you look at this blog for example, every single article is over 1,000 words in length. This not only because I like to provide value but it shows Google I know what I’m talking about when I publish new content.
It’s very easy for me to outrank other blogs that have posted similar content almost instantly simply by writing longer, more professional content than those using spin bots or 500 word articles.
You need to apply this to your very own affiliate website. Long articles, 1000-3000 words.
If English isn’t your first language, or you hate writing content then you need to outsource this to someone else.
Some good options to consider are Upwork, Textbroker.
Powerful Off Page SEO
Okay so you’ve got a great niche, powerful domain and high quality content, now it’s time to start ranking your affiliate website. If you bought a great domain as I recommended and the keywords you’re targeting are low competition then you’ll probably be showing up on page one (or rank one!) within a few days of posting your content.
If not or you are stuck on position 3 or lower then you need to buy some social signals and backlinks. Alternatively you need to go out and get some powerful manual links. This is when you contact a website webmaster and try and get a link or a guest post for your website.
The best social signals to buy are Facebook shares or Google plus shares. Checkout Fiverr for these.
Combining all four powerful points will ensure you can Make Money With Affiliate Websites.
