So you want to start a side hustle and make money from the comfort of your own home. Maybe you want to travel more, buy something special or just have reassurances of having extra money in the bank.
I don’t blame you. When I was 16 I started my first side hustle by drop shipping DVD’s on eBay. I’d make $10 profit per sale and back then there was minimal competition. Fast forward ten years and there’s many different ways to make money online.
If you’re not sure which side hustle you can start then this post will give you an insight into 6 side hustles I’ve personally setup over the last few years. Some have been scaled into my full business but you can get started with minimal investment.
Make sure you set yourself up correctly, if you’re planning to make a profit from your side hustle you should keep accurate income and expenses so you can file a tax return at the end of the financial year.
There are many benefits to starting a business early on such as carrying forward losses which can aid with tax benefits further down the track. Many people think expenses are out of pocket but they are deducted from profits.
Best Side Hustles For Making Money
Regardless of what anyone says, you need to spend money to make money. Don’t be afraid to lose some money starting a side hustle. If you can’t invest money right now, focus on your current situation, save some $$ and when you’re ready start. Don’t put yourself under financial pressure. The side hustles below can wait until you’re ready.
1. Affiliate Content Marketing
It’s probably the easiest way to make money online and you can get a side hustle up and running within a few hours. The main way is to create a blog and write about products, services and then become an affiliate and link to the buy now page.
There are many examples of this on news websites, review sites, even blogs such as mine. We provide exceptional content and then if you proceed to buy a recommendation we’ll get a small commission.
Affiliate commissions usually range from a 5-20% on physical products through to 50-75% for digital products or services. If you consider a course that costs $500 you could make $250 per sale.
Getting started is easy, you’ll need a domain name, web hosting and a will to create content on a regular basis. If you’ve got a bigger budget you could hire freelancers to write content too.
A typical website can be setup and hosted for one year for under $100.
While it sounds easy, you can get distracted easily. I’d recommend buying a course such as Savage Affiliates (read review) that will show you the entire process. Remember the cost can be offset from your first few commissions.
My best site makes $20,000 per month.
2. One Product Sales Funnels
Move over Shopify, you definitely don’t need to setup an e-commerce store these days to start your online business. With platforms such as Clickfunnels, Kartra and Builderall you can create product sales funnels where you’ll promote one product with a few upsells within a couple hours.
You simply connect your domain name and go out and find a winning product (this is the tricky part and may requires lots of testing). You’ll create upsells to complement the front end product such as express shipping, warranties or complementary products to turn a $27 sale into a $270 one.
You’ll use platforms such as Aliexpress and Banggood to find products that you can blind ship directly to your customers without ever coming into contact with them yourself, taking a cut of the sales price – the cost price. This model is called drop shipping and is quite popular currently.
You’ll run traffic using platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and Pinterest to drum up engagement and then convert these cold visitors into hungry buyers ready to spend.
You can get setup for under $300 and should put aside $750+ for your first ad campaigns. If you find a winning product quickly and scale it you can make a small fortune very quickly.
There are over 50 courses that teach e-commerce drop shipping but very few touch on the topic of sales funnels but I have found eCom Elites (read review) to offer the best training on the topic. You’ll need their $297 plan as the $197 one doesn’t include sales funnel training.
One of my two funnels makes $5,000 per month.
3. Google Shopping eCommerce Store
Google is where people ready to buy go to find the best deal. I’m sure you’ve seen those ads across the top of Google when you’re looking to buy something. They are called Google Shopping Ads.
Right now, hardly anyone is using Google Shopping as they are focusing on Facebook and Instagram Ads. That leaves a very lucrative opportunity for people who are ready to hustle some profits.
You simply create a Shopify store and load up products people are searching for, either branded or unbranded depending on the drop shipper you can find. You can even use free platforms such as Woocommerce.
You’ll fill your store with lots of products and then create a Google Shopping feed which you can integrate with your Ad account. You’ll then target keywords such as ‘Buy Product X’ or ‘Buy Niche X’ and scale up winners and remove those underperforming or costing too much.
Tracking pixels ensure you’re fully aware of where your visitors and buyers are coming from, which keywords and products are making the best commissions and higher returns.
There’s only a few courses out there that teach Google Shopping in great detail. I’d recommend Google Ads eCom Academy Review by Tristan Broughton (read review) for a conclusive course on the entire topic including real case studies.
I used to do this and made on average $3,000 per month.
4. Local Business Marketing Agency
I’m sure you’ve seen courses promoting this on your Facebook feed. You will setup your own agency and offer local businesses the opportunity to get more visitors, leads and ultimately sales.
If you know your way around social media and platforms such as Clickfunnels or Kartra you can easily setup basic funnels to collect leads for local businesses.
Without leads and sales, local businesses can’t trade and while many have good websites and lots of clients, most are struggling. That’s why over 95% of small businesses fail. You can provide a solution to them, that costs next to nothing to get started and can be run in your spare time.
The biggest challenge will be finding clients for your own business, if you can find them then you’re onto a winner as you can setup test campaigns to show them the power of your services.
You’ll need to spend some money on ad platforms such as Facebook and Google Adwords. You also need to offer value such as a free coupon or freebie that your leads will go crazy for and help you by sharing your content with their friends.
There’s tons of courses out there on the topic. Profit League is a big name that I’d probably avoid, you can checkout this course I recently reviewed for a better understanding of the topic.
I’ve done this when I was in early 20’s and made good money.
5. Broker Web Services
It’s probably the oldest trick in the book and involves brokering web services from platforms such as Fiverr, Legiit and Upwork to real life businesses, your own website or another platform such as eBay.
If you google, logo design florida, you’ll see a ton of businesses offering logo design services for a few hundred dollars. Head over to Fivver and you can get one designed in under 24 hours for a $5. Add the vector files and you’ll be sorted for under $50. You can easily make a few hundred dollars per client by brokering such services.
There are thousands of examples of where this would work giving you a good side hustle to run as the project manager in your spare time. Apply what you know and how you could outsource work to someone else.
I recently met a programmer who hired a full team of remote workers all over the world and was then charging Australian hourly rates to his clients, pocketing thousands every week for the difference.
You’ll likely need a way to accept credit card payments (Stripe), a project management tool such as Clinked and a way to get clients. Setup costs are minimal but you may need funds in the bank to pay for services until you receive payment from your own customers.
I’ve done this many years ago, it still works today.
6. Solve A Problem
If you’re a regular reader of my blog then you’ll know I like to talk about the easiest way to make money online is by solving a problem. If you can find a problem people are looking to solve then you’re well on your way to a good side hustle.
There’s many things you could do to get that information to the target audience. Maybe you could create an eBook, a subscription service, a membership course, a training seminar, a webinar or a fully fledged course.
The key is to provide exceptional value for FREE in exchange for a lead or email capture and then sell them on your premium upsells. There are far too many people who will try and send cold traffic to a sales page for a $997 course, this simply does not work. You might get one or two overly keen buyers but I guarantee you’ll waste time and money.
Send traffic to a warm up page, then an email sequence with more free value and then finally give them an upsell they can’t resist. You’ll appear as the authority in your niche and more people will trust you.
Key point, give away value and you’ll be rewarded for that.
There’s no real course to mention here, I did enjoy reading Sabri Suby’s latest book that shows you the power of providing value and solving problems. Probably worth a read if you can get your hands on a copy!
The sky really is the limit as to how much you can make.
Now you know six of the best side hustles you can do to make money online in 2019. These methods will continue to work for years to come and as more and more people learn how the internet works and the power it brings to business will only get better.
